FAQs

Here are some of the things we are often asked....

We understand that families often have lots of questions when starting speech and language therapy. Every child is unique, and it’s natural to want to know how everything works and how you can help along the way. To make things a little easier, we’ve answered some of the questions parents and carers ask us most often.

The first step is to book an assessment – the price varies depending on your child’s needs. If it is a Speech Sound Assessment or Stammering Advice Session it is £150. If you are worried about your child’s understanding and their communication then a full assessment is needed at the cost of £240. The assessment will be in person and usually takes about an hour. It will include a case-history too and you will be given lots of verbal feedback and advice. Detailed written reports can be opted for, but we won’t try and make you take this option unless it is going to be really helpful e.g. to get an onward referral or to use as evidence for an EHCP. Often a report is better after a few sessions so we can provide an educational setting with very specific ideas of things that helped your child.

The assessment will be fun! Assessments can be formal or informal, depending on the child’s needs. Your child might manage to sit for a formal assessment if they are old enough, but even this will be disguised in games to keep it exciting. Equally, if you are worried your child might not co-operate please don’t panic! We recognise that one of the reasons you may be coming to see us is because your child is struggling to communicate with people around them and we are highly sensitive to this. So, if appropriate, we often do a more informal assessment to get the information we need. This might be done through chatting with you, observing how your child plays and interacts and makes requests etc. We want them to feel that they are having fun and that they are at ease. If a child struggles with overstimulation, we can change the environment quickly to allow for a calmer setting. Your child will also be offered a prize from the prize box at the end. Children often don’t want to leave!

Therapy sessions usually involve a series of short activities so the child doesn’t get bored. We make everything fun! The sessions last for 45 minutes and then that allows us to chat and give feedback at the end, as well as write up our notes and perhaps email you some resources or make any necessary phone calls e.g. to their nursery (with your consent). They will be offered a little prize at the end of each session!

We will work with you as a family to provide you with the tools to help support your child. We will demonstrate activities, and we have plenty of resources we can provide. And we will give you a tailored recommendation of how best to support your child’s progress. You will also have watched carefully in the sessions what we do and this will be eye-opening. The more carryover support, the child has at home and/or in their educational setting, the quicker progress will be and the fewer sessions will be required.

Communication is usually like riding a bike – once you have mastered the new skill, you tend to have it for life. They may need support to generalise their new skill into everyday situations, but we can talk this through and support them with this. Speech Therapy support now if setting your child’s communication skills up for life.

We work directly with children from the ages of 2 to 18 and can even provide useful support and advice to parents with babies.

It will depend on the specific needs. To give you a guide, the initial assessments available range from £150 to £240. This is all some children require. Others might have a block of therapy with clear targets to achieve. Therapy sessions are £120 per session. We can work out more precise costings once we confirm your child’s exact needs. We operate on a pay-as-you-go system, and we won’t ever suggest sessions if they are not needed.

Where possible and practical, we will try to accommodate home based sessions or a visit to your child’s nursery or school. Please ring, email or fill out the enquiry form. Our pricing structure is also different for sessions done outside the clinics.
