Here’s some simple activity ideas for working on speech sounds, using items you find around the classroom.
You can use these activities to work on any stage of your speech sound therapy, whether you are working on producing single sounds in isolation, a sound within a word, or a word in a sentence.
Place some word or sound cards face down. To earn a bean bag, the pupil must turn over a card and practice their speech sound e.g. name the picture or say the sound. The pupil can then throw the bean bag into a hula hoop. Put out two hula hoops and take turns.
Fill a bag with objects that have the pupils target sound in them, for example, for ‘k’, key, car, carrot, sock, block, rock, etc. The pupil must close their eyes and choose an item then name the item.
Read a book with your pupil, emphasising any words with their target sound in. Ask the pupil to use a target word in a sentence e.g. The car is blue.
Place blocks around the room on the floor, and underneath each block place a picture card for a word you are working on, for example when working on ‘k’ you may have pictures of a car, key, coat, camera, etc. The pupil must name the picture and practice their target sound in a word before placing the block on the tower. How tall can they build their tower?
During a colouring task, talk about the pictures and colours, emphasising the pupils target sound in the words you use. To make it more challenging, ask the pupil to practice their target sound (or a word) each time they want to change colour!
Print these out and keep them handy to grab & go, making it easier to get that 5-10 minutes of speech sound work into your busy day.
