Speech therapy is never done sitting still at Speech4Kids!
Children need it to be interactive, interesting and appealing to them, which is why our therapy rooms look like playrooms – we have something for every child to choose from.
Movement is so important for fun, creative learning and engaging children with language-based activities. Creating activity and movement very much encourages language to flow as we talk about what’s happening now, next and in the past.
The children we see, often leave their therapy session asking when they are coming back again – to play!
What they don’t realise, is how much they have learnt from the session to develop their speech, language and communication but also, how much we have learnt too, to plan the next session.
You don’t need much space to add movement into play – here’s an idea from our speech therapist Sasha…it’s a popular one!
In this activity we used a soft blanket/throw to make teddy and his friends 'bounce, bounce, bounce'!
The parent joined in by helping Sasha to hold the blanket on each side.
They then flipped and shook the blanket up and down to create a bouncing motion…and one by one, 'whoops!' the teddies fell off their bouncing bed!
Words used in the activity were:
Whoops
Whoosh
Bounce
Go
Fall down
Fall off
Jump
Communication words used in the activity were:
Wait / waiting
Pausing
Ready
Go
Children can add words into the directions and share their excitement and observations.
